Intuition 101: Unlocking the Power of Your Inner Wisdom
Introduction: What Is Intuition?
I can almost guarantee that if you think back, you have at least one story where you just knew—an intuitive nudge that led to a successful outcome. Maybe it was about a relationship, a career decision, or something as simple as turning right instead of left, only to stumble upon someone at a coffee shop who changed your life.
The truth is, you’re likely relying on your intuition more than you realize. Every day, in small, seemingly mundane moments, you make intuitive choices—like knowing what your body needs to eat, deciding how to spend your time, or navigating unpredictable social situations. Maybe you think of someone out of the blue, reach out, and spark a conversation you wouldn’t have had otherwise.
Even when you say “no” to something simply because it doesn’t feel right, that’s your intuition at work—your inner wisdom guiding you, even if you can’t explain why.
This post aims to give intuition a framework, helping you recognize and intentionally tune into these subtle, guiding moments. By doing so, you can harness your intuition with purpose, bringing more flow, ease, and alignment into your life. Intuition isn’t random; it’s your inner compass, waiting to be heard.
The Science Meets Soul of Intuition
Often described as a “gut feeling,” intuition is much more—it’s your soul’s GPS. Neuroscience explains it as the brain’s ability to process subconscious signals quickly, drawing on past experiences, emotional memories, and bodily sensations through the gut-brain connection. Spiritually, it’s the way your higher self communicates, guiding you toward choices aligned with your soul’s truth.
Think of it as your higher self using the tools of your mind and body—the limbic system, pattern recognition, and emotional resonance—to nudge you in the right direction. These subtle feelings or inner knowings are whispers of your soul, harmonizing with your brain’s capabilities. Trusting your intuition is both a grounded and spiritual act of self-alignment.
How Intuition Manifests
Intuition manifests uniquely for everyone, blending physical sensations and energetic impressions. It often connects to the "5 Clairs":
Clairvoyance (seeing with your mind’s eye)
Clairaudience (hearing with your inner or outer ears)
Clairsentience (feeling in your body)
Claircognizance (knowing without explanation)
Clairalience (smelling intuitively)
It can also appear through symbols, repeated numbers, or vivid dreams. Intuition is a universal human gift—a constant stream of insight if you choose to tune in. Reflect on how your intuition has been speaking to you recently. The limbic system and your brain’s ability to recognize emotional patterns play a role in these intuitive nudges.
Common Blocks to Intuition
Life’s chaos often drowns out intuition, leaving us tangled in intrusive thoughts. Fear, panic, or unresolved trauma can mimic intuition, leading us astray. Trauma, in particular, disconnects us from our bodies, severing a vital channel for intuitive communication.
However, as we heal, deepen self-awareness, and rebuild the bridge between our bodies and intuition, we tap into a flow that feels natural and supportive. Intuition thrives in this space, guiding us back to an ease that is our birthright.
3 Steps to Start Tapping Into Your Intuition
Create Stillness – Quiet the noise with meditation, mindful breathing, or journaling.
Ask Open-Ended Questions – Practice asking your intuition simple questions:
What is the best way for me to spend my energy today?
What does my body need right now?
What is my inner guidance trying to tell me?
Trust the Subtle Nudges – Intuition often feels subtle at first. Document your insights, whether through a journal or phone notes, to affirm your inner guidance.
Practical Exercises to Strengthen Your Intuition
Daily check-ins: “How am I feeling today? What do I need?”
Use oracle cards to open intuitive channels.
Free-write answers to questions in an intuitive journaling session.
Conduct “intuitive experiments,” like choosing a route or activity based on your first instinct and observing the outcome.
Real-Life Stories of Intuition in Action
Personally, I have had to lead my life in this way most of the time. Making decisions based solely on logic and reason never quite hit the mark.
One particular example is when I made the decision to move to Europe in my early twenties. This was one of those BIG LIFE decisions. When I was presented with the opportunity, I immediately and impulsively said “YES” and then spent weeks ruminating, sitting by the ocean, trying to wrap logic and reason around my impulsive, intuitive decision.
By this time in my life, I had already met a million dead ends trying to make a life for myself. I was overworked and had recently had to drop out of college due to chronic burnout (this would happen again later, but that’s for another post). I had recently gotten out of a long-term abusive relationship that lasted years. I was struggling, and so far, my choices made based solely on logic had completely failed me. I was stuck.
So, despite never having left the country before, despite barely seeing much of my own country, I made the move.
Ultimately, this set me on a path that led me here—a path I would have never found myself on otherwise. Because of that decision, I met people who changed my life for the better, made lifelong friends, and got to know myself in ways I never imagined. I met parts of myself that had been lying dormant (for maybe lifetimes!).
I now strive to lead with my intuition and use my logical and analytical thinking mind to support those deeper, intuitive nudges. I've learned to trust my intuition.
Conclusion: Intuition as a Skill, Not a Gift
Intuition isn’t a rare gift—it’s a faculty of the brain and a communication tool for the soul. You’re likely using it more than you realize in moments requiring quick decisions. By bringing awareness to these moments and practicing, you can strengthen this connection.
When was the last time you followed your intuition? How did things work out? If you have your own story of intuition guiding you to something transformative, let me know, and stay tuned for deeper dives into practical ways to hone your intuition in upcoming posts.
